Ali Babe and the Forty Thieves – Pontefract Town Hall

Over 70 years ago the local vicar in Pontefract thought a Pantomime would be a great way to bring the community together after the dark days of World War 2 and 70 years later with Brexit looming and more things to worry about than we care to mention laughter is still on the agenda at St Giles Panto in Pontefract.

The plot follows the story of Ali Baba from the Tales of the Arabian Nights – a poor boy who discovers the lair of the Forty Thieves and helps to solve their terrible plan to take over the Grand Palace winning the hand of the beautiful Princess from Cairo in the process.   The show includes the traditional characters of a Prince and Princess, Sultan and the King of Thieves, but to give it a panto twist there is also Mustafa Screwloose – the local idiot and a fabulous Cat and Dog themed good and bad spirit.  Being pantomime there is lots of slapstick, audience participation and humour lead by Pontefract’s favourite Dame, Eric Arundell as Fatima Fandango – a retired belly dancer.
It is a traditional panto, but with an up-to-date script.  The show features 100s of costumes all made locally and scenery brought from the South of England to transform Pontefract Town Hall into the palaces of Arabia. The cast of over 70 people range in age from 5 to 75 and the show features lots of songs which will be familiar to you.
Tickets start at £7 and are available from stgilespanto.co.uk

Kestrels are the hardest birds to train, but not for Billy.  He feeds her, cares for her and trains her.  Together they are ready to fly.  Everything goes quiet when he’s with Kes, all his troubles and worries fade into the horizon.  Billy has all he needs and all he wants, until he makes a fatal decision that changes the course of things forever.  Following a sell-out run in 2016, Kes is back at Leeds Playhouse in the Pop Up Theatre until 16th February.

Tickets start at £13.50 and are available from Leeds Playhouse
